Ouarzazate: The Desert Crossroads

Dry, sunny and pointing in four useful directions.

Ouarzazate is a junction rather than a spectacle. It sits on the southern side of the Atlas where the roads to the Draa valley, the Dades, Ait Benhaddou and the Tichka all meet, which makes it a useful overnight and route-planning stop in southern Morocco. The area is generally dry, and several important southern routes meet here, which makes Ouarzazate useful for flexible itinerary planning.

Why routes keep coming back here

Look at a map of southern Morocco and the reason is obvious: this is where the north–south crossing of the Atlas meets the east–west valley roads. You can leave Ouarzazate towards the desert, towards the gorges, towards the coast or back over the mountains, which gives a route planner real flexibility when weather or conditions force a change.

The riding around town

The roads leading out of Ouarzazate vary by direction and conditions, with many open sections — a relief after the Atlas passes. The run east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs and the run south towards Agdz and the Draa are both easy, high-mileage days with big skies and very little traffic once you clear the outskirts.

Kasbahs and film studios

Kasbah Taourirt in town is genuinely worth an hour, and the film studios on the edge of the city are an odd but entertaining stop given how much desert cinema has been shot in the surrounding landscape. Neither takes a full day, which suits a stop that is usually about position rather than sightseeing.

Weather you can plan around

Ouarzazate is dry and sunny for most of the year, which makes it a useful fixed point in an itinerary. When the Atlas is under cloud or the passes are uncertain, plans tend to be rebuilt around getting to or from here.

Good to know

  • Good place to refuel, service or sort a problem before heading further south
  • Roads out are open and fast — watch closing speeds with oncoming traffic
  • Wind across the open sections can be strong, particularly in the afternoon
  • Shade is scarce once you leave town; carry water even on short legs

Duration

Usually one night as a staging point. A second night makes sense if you want to ride the Draa valley or Ait Benhaddou properly rather than passing through.

Best time to travel

Rideable year-round thanks to the dry climate. Summer is hot but manageable with early starts; winter days are clear and pleasant.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ouarzazate worth stopping in, or just passing through?
Most riders stop because of where it is rather than what it is. That said, the kasbah and studios fill an evening comfortably, and the reliability of the weather makes it a sensible place to build a schedule around.
What is the riding like between Ouarzazate and the desert?
Open and fast. The road south through Agdz and the Draa valley is one of the easier big-mileage days in Morocco, with palm groves and kasbahs breaking up long straight sections.
Can you get a bike serviced in Ouarzazate?
It is one of the better places in the south to sort a problem, being a real town rather than a village. What is available depends on the machine, so it is worth flagging any known issue before you leave Marrakech.
