What “Sahara enduro” means here
This page is for riders who want the desert to be the main event rather than a short stop on a road tour. Routes are built around off-road ground: dunes, compacted piste, rocky hamada, sandy oueds and remote southern tracks.
Erg Chebbi is directly accessible from the Merzouga base. Erg Chegaga is more remote and is reached through longer desert routes from areas such as M’Hamid, Foum Zguid, Lac Iriki or on extended crossings from Merzouga.
Two different Sahara riding areas
Both are part of southern Morocco, but they create different types of enduro day.
Erg Chebbi / Merzouga
Tall dunes with immediate access to hamada, piste, villages and a strong accommodation base.
Erg Chegaga / M’Hamid
More remote dune terrain reached by longer desert tracks, usually as part of a multi-day programme.
Lac Iriki & Foum Zguid
Wide, open desert and dry-lake terrain used on Ouarzazate/Erg Chegaga routes.
Southeast desert villages
Taouz, Ouzina, Ramlia, Tafraout Sidi Ali and nearby areas can form part of longer Merzouga programmes.
How the guide adapts the day
Sand exposure is progressive. A rider with less sand experience can spend more time on compacted piste and dune edges, while a stronger group can include more technical terrain.
Heat, wind, ground condition and rider fatigue all affect what is sensible. The guide can shorten, reroute or change the surface mix rather than forcing a fixed plan when the desert says otherwise.

Rider requirements and practical notes
- A valid full motorcycle licence is required for the KTM enduro programmes operated through our partner network.
- Tell us honestly about your off-road and sand experience so we can confirm the programme is suitable.
- Multi-day desert enduro is not designed as a first-ever off-road experience; basic off-road confidence is strongly recommended.
- Bring personal travel/medical insurance that covers motorcycle riding and emergency repatriation.
- Routes can change with heat, wind, sand, rain, track condition and the riding level of the group.
Where you stay
For Merzouga-based enduro programmes, we normally use a riad or hotel as the riding base. A desert-camp night can be included when it fits the confirmed itinerary.
Riad / hotel: Dar Hassan Merzouga · Riad Merzouga Dunes · or similar
Desert camp when included: Merzouga All-inclusive Glamping · Sirocco Luxury Camp · or similar
The exact property is confirmed in your personalised itinerary and may change with availability.
Sahara enduro terrain
Soft sand is only part of the story: the Moroccan Sahara also means long piste, rocky hamada, dry oueds and remote desert crossings.

Frequently asked questions
Erg Chebbi or Erg Chegaga?
Erg Chebbi is easier to access from Merzouga and works for short as well as long programmes. Erg Chegaga is more remote and normally belongs in a multi-day route.
Can one programme include both dune areas?
Yes, longer partner programmes can connect the Merzouga/Erg Chebbi region with the wider southern desert and Erg Chegaga. The exact route is confirmed for the booked duration.
How fit do I need to be?
Enduro riding in sand is more physical than road touring. Basic off-road experience and reasonable riding fitness are recommended for multi-day programmes.
Are fixed kilometres published?
Not for flexible desert-track programmes. Surface and conditions matter more than a map distance, so exact daily distance is confirmed with the route rather than invented for SEO.
