The Todra is short and dramatic, with a paved road through its best-known section. Where the Dades makes you work for its views with a climb, the Todra simply funnels you between limestone walls that rise around 300 m on either side, on a road that stays flat and smooth for the most impressive section. The narrow central section is compact, so it is often combined with stops on foot and a longer ride through the surrounding valley.
The narrowest part is only a few hundred metres long, with the walls close enough on both sides that the temperature drops noticeably as you enter. The surface is good tarmac and the gradient is negligible. The central gorge is paved and has little gradient, but suitability still depends on each rider's experience, traffic and the conditions on the day.
Almost everyone rides in, photographs the narrows and rides back out. The road continues north through the upper gorge and eventually climbs onto the plateau towards Tamtattouchte, becoming rougher, emptier and far more interesting. That continuation is a proper half-day of riding rather than a photo stop.
The narrows are a fixed stop on the coach-tour circuit, so the middle of the day brings parked vehicles and pedestrians in the road. Early morning and late afternoon are quieter, cooler and considerably better for photographs — the light drops into the gorge at an angle rather than flat overhead.
The run in from Tinghir passes through a long palm oasis with irrigation channels, small villages and frequent pedestrian and donkey traffic. It is slow going and worth treating as part of the destination rather than an obstacle before it.
An hour covers the famous narrows. Half a day lets you continue north to the plateau, which is where the real riding is.
Comfortable most of the year. Spring and autumn are ideal; summer is bearable because the gorge itself stays cool, though the approach is hot.
