Where the tarmac ends and the Sahara actually begins.
Merzouga is one of Morocco’s key bases for desert riding. Erg Chebbi — the dune sea that rises abruptly out of flat stony ground east of the village — stretches across a broad Sahara landscape. What matters on a bike is that varied desert terrain begins close to the village, so the riding experience can start without a long transfer just to reach the dunes.
Compacted piste is common around the area; its difficulty depends on surface condition, pace and rider experience. Around the erg itself the sand turns soft, which is the genuinely technical part and where groups separate by experience. North and south of the dunes the ground is hamada — flat, open and stony, with difficulty that varies by surface condition and pace. Threading between them are dry oued beds whose surface changes noticeably through the season.
It is entirely possible to ride here for days without committing to deep sand. The compacted routes around the erg, out towards Taouz and past Khamlia, give the desert experience on ground that most competent riders handle comfortably. How much soft sand a route includes should be decided with the group on the day, not fixed in advance from a map.
Merzouga sits at the end of a long approach whichever way you come. From the north the Ziz valley drops out of the Middle Atlas through palm groves and gorge sections; from the west the road runs across open desert via Rissani and Erfoud. Neither is a dull transfer, and both change character completely in the last hour as the ground turns to sand.
Summer temperatures here regularly make midday riding unpleasant and, in full gear, genuinely unwise. The practical answer is early starts and long middays out of the sun rather than avoiding the season entirely — but spring and autumn simply give you more usable hours on the bike.
One full day gets you real desert riding and the erg at sunset. Two or three days lets you ride in different directions rather than repeating the same ground.
October to April is the comfortable window, with spring and autumn best of all. Midsummer is very hot; riding is usually limited to the early morning and late afternoon.
