Ait Benhaddou and the Ounila Valley

The famous ksar — and the far better road to reach it.

Ait Benhaddou is one of Morocco's best-known fortified ksars: a fortified village of earthen kasbahs stacked on a hillside above a usually dry river. Every coach on the Tichka stops here. What most of them miss is that the interesting approach is not the main road at all, but the old Ounila valley route that drops down from Telouet — a slower, rougher and far more rewarding way in.

The back road from Telouet

Instead of continuing on the main Tichka road, riders can turn off at Telouet and follow the Ounila valley south. The road is narrow, partly rough and threads past small villages, terraced fields and older kasbahs with almost no traffic. It takes longer than the main road and can make the approach to Ait Benhaddou a rewarding part of the ride when conditions suit the route.

The ksar itself

The site is a UNESCO World Heritage property and is genuinely impressive up close — earthen construction, defensive walls and a steep climb to the granary at the top. Crossing the riverbed on foot to reach it takes a few minutes. An hour or two covers it comfortably.

Timing around the crowds

Midday brings the coach traffic from Marrakech. Early morning and late afternoon are quieter and the low light on the earthen walls is far better for photographs. Riders staying overnight in the village get the site almost to themselves at either end of the day.

Where it fits

Ait Benhaddou sits naturally between the Tichka pass and Ouarzazate, roughly half an hour from the latter. It works as a lunch stop on a transfer day, or as an overnight if you want the ksar without the crowds and an early start towards the desert.

Good to know

  • The Ounila back road from Telouet is rough in sections — check conditions before committing on a loaded bike
  • Coach traffic peaks in the middle of the day on the main approach
  • The riverbed crossing to the ksar is on foot; park in the village
  • Very little shade on the site itself — an early or late visit is more comfortable

Duration

One to two hours for the ksar. Half a day if you take the Ounila valley road in, which is the version worth doing.

Best time to travel

Spring and autumn for comfortable temperatures and good light. Winter is fine and quiet; summer middays are hot on the exposed hillside.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ounila valley road suitable for a big adventure bike?
In good conditions, yes, with care — it is narrow and rough in places rather than technical. After rain it is a different proposition, and on a heavily loaded bike the main road is the sensible call.
How long do you need at Ait Benhaddou?
An hour or two covers the ksar including the climb to the top. The reason to allow longer is the approach road, not the site itself.
Is it better to stop for lunch or stay the night?
Most itineraries stop for an hour or two en route to Ouarzazate. Staying overnight is worth considering if you want the site without coach traffic and photographs in decent light.
