The mountain spine that makes Morocco worth the flight.
The Atlas is the reason most riders come to Morocco rather than somewhere closer. Two passes do the heavy lifting: the Tizi n'Tichka, which tops out around 2,260 m on the main Marrakech–Ouarzazate road, and the older, narrower Tizi n'Test at roughly 2,090 m to the west. Both were rebuilt or resurfaced in recent years, so the tarmac is generally better than the reputation suggests — the challenge is gradient, exposure and traffic rather than potholes.
The Tichka is wide, well engineered and busy with lorries grinding up the gradient; overtaking room appears and disappears quickly. The Test is the opposite — narrow, sometimes single-track with a drop on one side, far less traffic, and a surface that rewards a steady pace over a fast one. Between them, the Middle Atlas around Ifrane and Azrou is a different character again: long sweeping curves through cedar forest, closer to Alpine riding than desert.
Both main passes can hold cloud into late morning, and the temperature difference between Marrakech and the summit is routinely ten to fifteen degrees. In winter the Tichka closes occasionally for snow and the Test more often; neither closure is predictable more than a day or two ahead. Riders regularly underestimate how cold the descent feels after a warm start on the plain.
The Atlas is a crossing, not a destination you circle. Almost every Morocco itinerary uses it to get between the imperial cities in the north and the desert in the south, which means you usually ride it twice — once out, once back — and it is worth taking a different pass each way if the season allows.
The Tizi n'Tichka and Tizi n'Test get the attention, but the side roads off them are often the better riding: the Ounila valley road down towards Ait Benhaddou, the smaller passes around Telouet, and the quieter routes east towards the Dades. These carry a fraction of the traffic and are where a guide who rides the region earns their keep.
Most riders cross the Atlas in a single day each way. Two or three days lets you use the smaller passes and side valleys rather than just the main road.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable: passes open, clear air and moderate temperatures. Summer is rideable but hot on the southern descent, and winter brings a genuine chance of snow closures.
Marrakech→Marrakech
